Comments regarding Ruth William’s article entitled, Vaccines on Film – Vaccines Without Vials, Fridges, or Needles in The Scientist magazine:

The following is the link of the referenced article:

You did a fine job but really left off a lot of information that would have been really nice to share. For example, you cannot say that most vaccines are lyophilized and injected. Also, you cannot say that these films can cycle through hot and cold temperatures without mentioning that methylcellulose itself has an LCST between 40-50 degrees Celsius. This means that depending on the exact formulation, these vaccine films will melt sitting in a hot truck as they will definitely breach these temperatures. Furthermore, it was failed to mention that not all vaccines can be converted to such a delivery route (i.e., GI or buccal). For example, perhaps a buccal-based delivery route will work for these thin films if the patient is told to let it dissolve in their mouths or perhaps these thin films can work as an GI-based vaccine delivery system. However, not all vaccines will be able to be delivered via a GI-based or buccal-based delivery system. The article really should mention these aspects.

Best wishes,
